Abstract
810,754. Supply systems for discharge lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 26, 1956 [Nov. 29, 1955], No. 36076/56. Class 38 (4). In a circuit wherein'one or more hot cathode discharge tubes 12 are supplied from a vibrator unit 1-8 through a harmonic reducing filter 9, 10, an auxiliary load is connected to the circuit to limit the open-circuit voltage and prevent premature starting before the electrodes are heated. In the Figure, a choke 16 of at least six times the tube impedance is connected across the electrodes 13, 14. After switching on the vibrator unit, and before glow switches 15 close, the current drawn by chokes 16 heats electrodes 13, 14, also loads the vibrator unit sufficiently to limit the terminal voltage to a value below the striking voltage. In another arrangement an auxiliary discharge tube having a striking voltage below the unloaded vibrator voltage and an extinction voltage above the glow switch closing voltage is used in place of the choke 16.
