Abstract

809,800. Water-resistant adhesive tapes. WINN & COALES Ltd., and COALES, F. B. July 22, 1957 [Aug. 3, 1956], No. 24024/56. Class 140. A water-resistant adhesive tape comprises a textile backing coated with a composition including a neutral greasy medium having alumimium stearate uniformly dispersed therein, the aluminium stearate being present in a proportion of 1 to 5 per cent by weight of the total coating composition The " neutral greasy medium " is defined as a greasy medium being neither acid or alkaline ; it may be petrolatum, lanoline or a dispersion of wax in oil but not wax alone. Such medium may form 40 to 75 per cent of the total weight of the composition. The backing may be woven, felted, or roved into a cord from cotton, jute, sisal, glass or synthetic fibre. Fillers such as talc, china clay, slate powder and fuller's earth may be included. The preferred aluminium stearate is one in which the aluminium and stearate group are not present in stoichiometric proportions. Colouring matters such as titanium dioxide may also be included. In an example petrolatum and pale oil (sp. gr. 0.892) is gelled by means of aluminium stearate, and petrolatum, titanium dioxide, talc and china clay added. The so-formed composition is applied to a textile backing by conventional means.
