809,511. Pipe couplings. DAVIES, R. PARRY-. Nov. 1, 1955 [Nov. 16, 1954], No. 31159/55. Class 99(1). In a pipe coupling comprising a spigot 10 and a socket 14 defining an annular space 18 between them, a torroidal ring 20 in the space which is squeezed and flattened when the spigot is inserted in the socket, and means for connecting the spigot and the socket together, the circumferential walls of the spigot and socket defining the space 18 are both tapered the angle of taper of the socket wall being smaller than the angle of taper of the spigot wall. As shown the spigot has a cylindrical part 12 registering with a bore 17 in the socket, and the connecting means comprises pins 21 on the socket entering bayonet slots 22 in the spigot ; alternatively, a union nut may be used when high pressure fluid is being handled, fluid pressure on the rings 20 drives it back into the space 18.
