Abstract

768,326. Hose couplings. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 22, 1955, No. 11765/55. Class 99(1) A tubular metal insert 3 attached to a hose has an outwardly extending flange 4 which is received within an annular recess 5 formed in a sleeve 1 of elastic material secured as by bonding to an insert 2 also attached to a hose. A ring 7 removable from a position in which the sleeve and insert 3 are retained in fluid-sealing relationship encircles the sleeve. As shown in the upper part of Fig. 1, the recess and flange each have oppositely directed and co-operating conical surfaces 4a, 6a and 4b, 6b so that effective sealing of the coupling is obtained against pressures above or below atmospheric pressure. The retaining ring 7 is slidable on two axially separated sets of plastic or metal rods 11, 11a embedded in and bonded to the external surface of the sleeve; the rods in each set are spaced apart circumferentially. The external diameter of the flange 4 is slightly greater than the diameter of the recess, and to prevent withdrawal of the ring from the sleeve the latter is provided with flanges 1a, 1b. In the modification shown in the lower part of Fig. 1, one wall 8 of the recess 5 is normal to the axis of the insert 3 the flange of which has a corresponding wall 9; the sleeve has an annular groove 10 adjacent the wall 8. In an alternative form, a split retaining ring 12, Fig. 2, is used, the free ends 16 of the ring being turned inwardly to engage upturned edges of a plate 17 partially embedded in and bonded to the sleeve 1, and the opposite ends 13, 14 being hinged on pins 15a, 15b held in a plate 15 also partially embedded in and bonded to the sleeve. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the sleeve has an annular recess of rectangular crosssection provided with rounded corners engaged by corresponding corners of the flange 4, a groove having oppositely directed conical side walls being formed in the peripheral surface of the recess.
