Abstract

809,331. Road-traffic signals on vehicles. SIMMS MOTOR UNITS Ltd., DODDS, R. G., and ROBINSON, E. L. June 13, 1956 [June 17, 1955], No. 17623/55. Class 118 (2). A direction indicator comprises two differently shaped elements with means to illuminate them alternately so as to produce the illusion of movement in the direction from one to the other. A box-like casing is divided into two portions by a light-tight partition placed about one quarter of the length of the box from one end thereof. Each portion has a red or amber translucent arrow in one face, the length of the tail part being about four times the length of the head part in one and only about a quarter of the length of the head in the other. These arrows are illuminable by lamps 24 and 23 respectively, connected as shown via the changeover contacts 44 of a relay 45 to a flasher 43 fed from the vehicle battery 42. The relay coil 45 has a condenser 49 in parallel and is connected to the supply in series with a resistor 46 so as to be slow to operate. Thus when flasher 43 energizes the system the lamp 23 is lit and after a short delay is extinguished and lamp 24 lit to produce an illusion of movement in the direction of the arrows. Preferred operating times and the intervals therebetween are discussed in terms of the time constants of the lamps. Two casings 50 and 50a are fitted to the rear of a vehicle, as shown in Fig. 7, and normal flashing indicators 51 and 51a are provided near the front of the vehicle. The lamp 52 of indicator 51 is connected in series with the lamps 23, 24 of the device 50, as in Fig. 4, or may be connected in parallel therewith (Fig. 5, not shown) or in series with lamp 24 only (Fig. 6, not shown).
