Abstract
754,471. Road-traffic signals on vehicles. PARRISH, E. W. March 30, 1955 [March 30, 1954], No. 9341/54. Class 118(2) A direction signalling system for vehicles of the flashing-light type comprises a three-position control switch 22 which connects the battery 26 to a selected one of movable contacts 7 or 8 when moved from its central off position. The battery is simultaneously connected to motor 2 which drives contacts 7 and 8 by means of a cam (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) so that they alternate between contacts 10, 12 and 11, 13, respectively. The selected front and rear signalling lamps 16, 17 or 19, 20 are thereby flashed and the respective low consumption pilot lamp 18 or 21 lights in series with the unlit one of the pair of selected signalling lamps each time the other one flashes. The pilot lamp thus flashes at twice the frequency of a signalling lamps A threepoint switch 28 is operated and feeds the two rear lamps 16 and 19 steadily whenever the brake is applied. This also lights both pilot lamps 18 and 21 steadily. If a turn is signalled while braking the rear lamps 16, 19 light steadily and the selected front lamp 17 or 21 flashes. Thus the pilot lamp on the turn-side flashes at half normal frequency while the other pilot lamp remains steadily lit. The control switch and pilot lamps are preferably mounted together on the dashboard where they can be easily seen and reached. The switch 22 may be replaced by relays operated by an existing direction indicator switch.
