Abstract

1,156,469. Road traffic signals on vehicles; lamp failure alarms. J. R. HOLLINS. 9 March, 1967, No. 11071/67. Headings G4N and G4Q. [Also in Division H1] A turn-indicating system using front and rear signal lamps 60, 64, 112 and 116, the rear signal lamps also being operable by a brake switch 68, is provided with an emergency switch 24 which allows all four lamps to be flashed together, and is characterized by the provision of a monitor lamp 76 which flashes when the emergency switch is operated and which otherwise monitors the rear signal lamps. When the emergency switch 24 is operated power is supplied through flasher 18 to input terminal 22 and is distributed through the first part of the switch to the front lamps via contacts 38 and 40, to the rear lamps via contact 40 and the turn-indicator switch 94, and to the lamp 76 via contact 42, the other terminal of the lamp being earthed through the second part of the switch and contact 48. When the emergency switch is off, as shown, power is supplied through the ignition switch 82 to contact 46 of the emergency switch and then through lamp 76 and switch 94 to the two rear lamps in parallel; the current flowing is sufficient to illuminate lamp 76 but not the rear signal lamps 112 and 116. If the turn switch 94 is operated to energize one of the rear signal lamps, the circuit is still completed through the other rear lamp, so that if lamp 76 goes out the other rear lamp is faulty. If the brake switch 68 is closed, the lamp 76 is short-circuited and should go out.
