Abstract
1464303 Lamp failure alarms; road traffic signals on vehicles G & P LEISURE PRODUCTS Ltd 22 July 1975 [25 April 1974] 18243/74 Headings G4N and G4Q An electrical connector for connection between a vehicle and trailer comprises a plug and socket combination for supply to the trailer of at least a permanent live connection P from the vehicle battery and a connection for each direction indicator light TL, TR on the trailer, and a switching unit including a pair of switches for energizing a respective one of the trailer direction indicator lights from the permanent live connection P when the corresponding vehicle direction indicator light VL, VR is energized, and means to indicate the failure of either trailer direction indicator light. As shown in Fig. 1, the switches are relays RL and RR which are energized to complete the circuit to the respective trailer indicator light when the corresponding vehicle indicator light is energized. Should a trailer indicator light fail, a relay RW is de-energized and a warning light TW is extinguished. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the vehicle indicator light failure warning device is also used to indicate failure of a trailer indicator light. As shown in Fig. 3, the switches are transistors 111, 112 having their bases connected to leads 104<SP>1</SP>, 105<SP>1</SP> of a multi-core cable which are connected to the vehicle indicator lights VL, VR. When, for example, the light VL is energized, the transistor 111 is turned on to connect the permanent live socket 101 of the connector to the socket 104 for the left trailer indicator light (not shown) through a relay coil 113 and the collector-emitter path of the transistor 111. Should the trailer light fail, the relay coil 113 is de-energized and a warning light 108 is extinguished. The connector 100 also has connections for the trailer brake and tail lights connected to the vehicle brake and tail lights VT and VR. The switches may be arranged within or outside the plug and socket combination.
