Abstract

Class 3(2) [Also in Groups XXXI, XXXIV and XXXVII] An indicator comprises a light source 56 an indicating element 28 and a prism 33 located between them so as to distribute the light over the indicating element. As shown in Fig. 2 the indicating element 28 is a transparent panel with opaque black indications marked on it, the panel being mounted in the front of a housing 35 which also supports the prism 33 so that it is immediately behind the panel. The housing also supports a tube 52 having a reflecting inner surface and at the remote end of which the light source 56 is mounted. Part of the prism is concealed from the light source 56 by a part 68 of the housing and the apex of the prism is cut away so that internal reflection in the prism of rays from the light source 56 illuminates the panel 28 uniformly. Three devices 12, 14, 16, Fig. 1, constructed as above are mounted on the dashboard of a motor car; the indicator 12 is controlled by a switch which is operated by a servomotor in the engine oil supply system, when the pressure is low so that the indicator 12 is then illuminated; the indicator 14 is controlled by a switch which is actuated when the parking brake is on so that the indicator 14 is then illuminated; the indicator 16 is controlled by an additional contact on the cut-out between the generator and the battery so that, if for any reason the cut-out is not closed by the generator so that the battery is not being charged, the indicator 16 is illuminated; all the indicator circuits are supplied through the ignition switch so that they do not operate when the ignition is switched off.
