809,329. Sterilizing in limited - strength/ vapour-permeable containers. POITRAS, E. J. April 13, 1955 [April 14, 1954], No. 10681/55. Class 49. Limited-strength or vapour-permeable containers charged with liquid or gas are sterilized in an autoclave heated by steam, the pressure in the autoclave is regulated to counterbalance the container pressure, and the autoclave atmosphere is agitated for complete, sterilizing-exposure of the container. Containers are sterilized in a chamber 10, the temperature and pressure of which are regulated by the separate supply of steam and air through lines 13 and 16 respectively, the provision of a fan 12 ensuring sterilizing-exposure of the containers to the steam pressure changes during heating and cooling of the containers are duplicated by a closed variable-volume element 20 whereby a container pressure excess, resulting in an expansion of the bellows, will drive a lever arm 24 into engagement with contact 25 to admit air through the line 16, and chamber-pressure excess will drive the lever arm 24 into engagement with contact 26 to vent the chamber through line 18. After sterilization, the steam supply is closed and air alone is supplied to counterbalance the container pressure. In another embodiment, a calculated container-pressure is relied on and the air supply is regulated by the temperature instead of the pressure of the chamber atmosphere.
