Abstract
Apparatus for pasteurizing or sterilizing materials in bottles or other containers consists of a treatment chamber or a series of treatment chambers 10 in alignment having a travelling platform C upon which the containers are freely deposited so as to move through the chamber or chambers in a straight or substantially straight path, the temperature of the containers being controlled by sprays of liquid at selected temperatures giving a series of temperature zones, the sprays impinging directly on the containers from which the liquid is immediately drained. As shown, the pasteurizer B is subdivided by hanging curtains 11 of rubber or other flexible material into a series of chambers 10 through which the bottles, &c., are carried by an endless conveyer C. The bottles are supplied by a conveyer P from which they are displaced in successive batches by a reciprocating pusher which extends a heating pipe 13 by which heat may be applied during the process. The cylinder 1 can be connected to a compressed air pump and to a vacuum pump through a pipe 7 having a valve 8. A cock 12 is provided for restoring pressure to normal, and a cock 11 for use while cleaning the cylinder 1. The vacuum treatment may precede or follow the pressure treatment. Pork treated by the process may finally be packed in storage cases with salt and the cases after being closed are kept in a cool and dry place.
