Abstract

587,056. Sterilizing chambers. BRIGGS & CO., Ltd., S., and BOWEN, G. H. Nov. 10, 1944, No. 22180. [Classes 49 and 81 (i)] A sterilizing or pasteurizing machine for bottles, cans or other containers, in which there is a chamber, means for carrying the containers through the chamber, and a fan for circulating a heating medium through the chamber, is characterized by the use of steam as the heating medium. In Fig. 1, containers m are placed on an endless belt conveyer n and pass to the heating compartments g and h of the chamber a, and finally to a cooling compartment i. Steam is circulated through compartments g and h by a fan q from a conditioning chamber p containing steam nozzles s and supplementary heaters t. In compartment i, nozzles w spray water over the containers, being supplied from external pumps x. In an alternative construction, compartments g and h are each subdivided into two sub-compartments through which steam is circulated by separate conditioning chambers, and air is used as the cooling agent, part of the air being recirculated through similar conditioning chambers, but without steam nozzles or heater. Additional steam nozzles may be provided in the heating zones g and h, and the containers may be carried through the chamber on wheeled carriages on rails.
