738,274. Sterilizing liquids. YOUNG, S. J. May 27, 1953 [May 27, 1952], No. 13447/52. Class 49. In sterilizing or pasteurizing liquids in metal drums or similar containers of heat-conducting material, the containers are fed into a heating chamber, the feed movement of the containers is halted before they leave the chamber, the containers are at this stage rotated on their axes and are sprayed with hot water or steam, and the feed movement is then resumed to discharge the containers from the chamber. The feed movement may be halted at successive zones in the heating chamber, and the containers rotated during each halt. The containers may be rotated also during their movement through the chamber. Containers y (Figs. 1 and 3) are transported through a chamber 1 by feeders comprising two endless chains 17 with rollers 19 therebetween, the containers being supported on longitudinal rails 23. The containers enter, at 8, the right-hand compartment of the chamber. This compartment is divided by a partition 10. In the portion to the right of the partition, water heated to 190‹ F. is delivered as sprays x from perforated trays 12 over the containers; in the portion to the left of the partition, water heated to 155‹ F. is so delivered. From the right-hand compartment the containers are transported to the central compartment of the chamber, and are there sprayed from perforated trays 12 with water heated to 150‹ F. From the central compartment the containers are transported to the left-hand compartment of the chamber, and are there sprayed with cold water. The containers leave the chamber at 9. The containers are rotated without forward movement by means of rubber-tyred wheels 30 driven on shafts 31, which wheels are situated in gaps in the rails 23.
