Abstract

<PICT:0719795/IV(c)/1> <PICT:0719795/IV(c)/2> A machine for treating stockings and other shaped textile articles comprising a chamber through which articles on forms are passed by an endless conveyer, is characterized in that (i) hot air is circulated through the chamber in a closed circuit, (ii) the air enters the chamber at a number of longitudinally spaced points, and (iii) radiant heaters are located on the chamber walls between the said spaced points, the radiant heaters being used when it is desired to plasticize nylon stockings. As shown, stockings on forms 11 are carried on an endless conveyer 10 through a treating chamber 12 comprising a lagged casing 30 of horseshoe shape to which hot air is supplied by a fan 35 through a conduit 36, branch conduits 37 and openings 38. The air returns from chamber 12 to fan 41 via conduits 38 and a heating chamber 40 containing an electric heater or heaters 40a. Baffle plates 42 at or near openings 38 direct the hot air in the desired direction. The temperature of the hot air is controlled thermostatically. Radiant heaters 45 are located on the walls of chamber 12 between conduits 37, and means is provided for switching the heating elements on and off individually in pairs, one on each side of the conveyer path. Both radiant heat and hot air are used together for plasticizing nylon or like stockings; the stockings are impregnated with liquid before entering chamber 12, or steam or water-vapour is supplied to the chamber. With the radiant heaters switched off, the machine can be used for finishing artificial silk or other stockings.
