Abstract
809,147. Powder metallurgy. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. Nov. 13, 1956 [Feb. 23, 1956], No. 34633/56. Class 82(1) [Also in Group XXXIV] In a friction brake at least one of the brake elements comprises a body of ferrous material having as an ingredient a small percentage of copper and a friction facing of sintered metal composition including molybdenum and manganese fused to the body of metal and a co-operating brake element comprised of chromium, molybdenum and vanadium is positioned for frictional engagement with the friction facing. Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate views of a single non-rotatable brake disc 9 of a multi-plate disc brake having friction facings 20, 21 of sintered metallic material on its opposite working faces the supporting brake disc is made of sheet steel having the following compositions: nickel 0.5 to 1.0 per cent, copper 0.25 to 0.6 per cent, carbon 0.10 to 0.12 per cent, iron to make up 100 per cent. The powdered metal composition is prepared having the following composition: carbon 3 to 8 per cent, molybdenum 0.25 to 0.75 per cent, manganese 0.15 to 0.6 per cent, nickel 0.05 to 0.15 per cent, silicon 0.05 to 0.2 per cent, chromium 0.05 to 0.2 per cent, iron to make 100 per cent. The powdered materials are pressed cold to provide a cake slightly thicker than the desired non-fusing layer. This cake is superimposed upon a brake disc of steel and is united thereto by sintering the composition in place of the disc. The co-operating rotatable brake discs (not shown) are of chromium-molybdenum-vanadium steel. The radial slots 23, 22 are provided in both sets of discs to prevent distortion of the discs.
