Abstract

1336519 Seals DEUTSCHE EDELSTAHLWERKE GmbH 21 July 1972 [7 Aug 1971] 34309/72 Heading F2B [Also in Division C7] A sealing ring or strip having a layer 1 subjected to friction abrasion and a layer 2 subjected to bending stresses is made by compressing together two layers of powder and sintering, the first layer having a composition by weight of 35-80% metal carbide and 20- 65% of a steel alloy made up of 0-1À5% C, 0-1À5% Si, 0À5-12À5% Mn, 1À5-20% Cr, 1-16% Mo, 0-38% Ni, 0À5-2À5% Cu, 0-1À5% Nb, 0-1À8% Al, 0-10% Co, 0-3% Ti, 0-1À5% V, 0-0À05% B, remainder Fe, and the second layer having a composition by weight of 5-30% metal carbide and 70-95% of a steel alloy of the same coefficient of thermal expansion as, and similar hardening behaviour to, the first layer. The metal carbides may be selected from chromium, vanadium, tantalum, molybdenum, tungsten and preferably titanium. Preferably, the steel alloy used for both the layers has the following composition by weight: 0À25-1À5% C, 0À5-1% Mn, 1À5-17À5% Cr, 1-5% Mo, 0À5-2À5% Cu, 0-0À8% Nb, 0-1% Al, 0-2% Co, 0-1% Ti, 0-0À8% V, 0À001-0À025% B, remainder Fe.
