Abstract

808,535. Vapour engine power plant. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Aug. 30, 1957 [Sept. 19, 1956], No. 28648/56. Class 122 (3). Liquefied gas of boiling point substantially below atmospheric temperature is pressurized and evaporated to provide a supply of the gas at a given delivery pressure and simultaneously to produce mechanical energy by compressing the liquefied gas to a pressure substantially in excess of the delivery pressure, evaporating the compressed liquefied gas and warming the soproduced gas, and then expanding the compressed gas to the delivery pressure to perform work in an expansion machine. Liquid methane is drawn from a thermally-insulated tank 10 by a pump 11 and discharged at a pressure, for example of 1000 p.s.i.g. to a heat exchanger 12 where it is evaporated and the methane gas heated to about 15 C., preferably by " free " heat from a heat source such as the atmosphere or a river, and then expanded in a machine 13 to the delivery pressure, for example 100 p.s.i.g., the expanding gas preferably being reheated to 15‹ C. from the same heat source in a further heat exchanger 14. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), gas produced by heat inleak to the tank 10 is drawn from the top of the tank and compressed to the delivery pressure by a compressor driven by the machine 13, the compressed gas being discharged to the outlet from the heat exchanger 14. The liquefied gas may be liquid oxygen or liquid nitrogen and may be fed to the pump by vaporizing a part of the liquid in an external heating coil and feeding the so-formed gas back to the tank 10 which is thereby pressurized. The machine 13 may be a turbine or a reciprocating engine and may be coupled to the pump 11.
