Abstract

808,223. Lined tubes. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. March 25, 1957 [June 8, 1956], No. 17859/56. Class 99(2). [Also in Group XVII] The longitudinal seam of tubular carton lined with heat sealable material includes a cardboard or like strip 2 running the length of the seam and originally attached to and separated from the carton blank by a strip 14 of the lining 3 at least as wide as the strip 2, the strip 2 being enclosed by the lining in the made up carton to obviate exposure of the carton blank edge to the contents. The blank is folded so that the strip rests adjacent a portion 17 of the carton blank with two layers of the lining 3 between it and the blank, Fig. 7, to which it is then heat sealed. The blank is again folded so that the lining portion 14 encloses the edge 15 and exposed side of the strip 2 and the edge 9 of the blank is juxtaposed with the edge 16 of the strip. The portion 17 may be secured to the adjacent panel 7a. In making the cartons, a continuous web may be cut and scored to form both the carton blank and the strip, waste material 30 separating these elements being led away over rollers 31, 32. The lining is secured to the strip and blank and as shown, may be extruded onto them from a reservoir 33. The multi-ply web is folded to tubular form, the longitudinal seam formed as above described and the tube is then pleated to produce bellows folds on the creased carton sides, Fig. 9.
