Abstract
658,607. Paper and like bags. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (American Bag & Paper Corporation). Aug. 15, 1949, No. 21223. [Class 94(ii)] In forming a self-opening rectangular bottom bag from a flattened tube 10 of paper or the like with bellows folds along each side, one wall is provided with two symmetrically disposed longitudinal cuts at one end, spaced from the sides to form a tab or tongue 14 so that when that end is formed into a diamond fold, as shown in Fig. 9, with a pair of longitudinal flaps 15, the end portions 16 of these flaps are united by a vertical fold or crease, and the tab 14 remains as a projection to form a closure member after further folding of the bottom of the bag. The bag is preferably of the kind provided with an impervious lining 11 of thermoplastic material, both bag blank and lining being comprised initially by inner and outer tubes which are cut and folded together and, with the flaps 15 standing vertical to the rest of the bag heat is applied along their length to cause the abutting inside faces of the relative portions of. the lining to adhere together. The flaps 15 are next folded downwardly to lie flat upon the adjacent portion of the bag bottom, Fig. 8, after which heat is applied transversely across the protruding portion 17, Fig. 3, and the triangular portion 20 of the diamond folded bottom is bent over along a crease line 21, Fig. 5. Finally the portion 17 with the tab 14 is folded inwardly along the line 19, and the tab is secured to the portion 20 by adhesive. The lining may consist of material other than thermoplastic in which case an adhesive is applied between the abutting faces at the requisite places.
