Abstract

Expanded thermoplastic materials are made by heating a mixture of the material and a nitroso-urea of the formula <FORM:0807405/IV (a)/1> or <FORM:0807405/IV (a)/2> wherein X is O or S, Y is nitroso, Z is H or nitroso, n is an integer, and R1, R2, R3 R4 are H or hydrocarbon groups. The nitroso-urea is mixed with the material, if desired as a dispersion or solution in a solvent which may be the monomer. Accelerators, fillers, plasticisers, other blowing agents, and starters or precursors such as thiosemicarbazide may also be present. The mixture may be heated under pressure. Suitable thermoplastic materials are polymers of styrene, vinyl compounds (e.g. chloride or acetate), acrylonitrile, butadiene, acrylates, methacrylates, epoxides and vinylidene chloride.ALSO:Nitroso-ureas of the formul <FORM:0807405/IV (b)/1> and <FORM:0807405/IV (b)/2> wherein X is O or S, Y is nitroso, Z is H or nitroso, R1, R2, R3, R4 are H or hydrocarbon groups, and n is an integer, are prepared by treating the corresponding amine with carbon dioxide, carbon disulphide, urea or thiourea, followed by nitrosation with nitrous acid. Examples show the nitrosation of ethylene-urea (mono- and di-), ethylene-thiourea and ethylenebis-urea.ALSO:Expanded rubber is made by heating rubber with a nitroso-urea of the formula:- <FORM:0807405/V/1> wherein X is O or S, Y is nitroso, Z is H or nitroso, n is an integer and R1R2R3R4 are H or hydrocarbon groups. The nitroso-urea is mixed with the rubber, if desired as a dispersion or solution in a solvent. Accelerators, fillers, plasticisers, other blowing agents, and starters or precursors such as thiosemicarbazide may also be present. The heating may take place under pressure.
