Abstract

806,614. Aircraft. COOKE, W. D. Jan. 2,1957 [March 20, 1956], No. 8657/56. Class 4. [Also in Group XXVI] A rotor provided on an aircraft to give lift and lateral movement comprises a series of radial ducts through which air flows radially outwards, means being provided to heat the air so as to increase the energy of the air streams flowing through the ducts, the heated air streams being finally discharged in a direction having a substantial component parallel to the axis of rotation. The rotor 1, 2, 6 shown in Fig. 2 is rotatably mounted on a shaft 9 which is adjustably secured to the fuselage 16 of the aircraft by means of a ball and socket joint 15 whereby the plane of rotation of the rotor may be varied so as to provide lateral movement to the aircraft. The shaft may be adjusted in the fore and aft plane by means of the arm 18 and in the lateral plane by means of the arm 19 which is moved laterally by a bell-crank lever. A Hookes joint may be used in place of the ball and socket joint. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5, a support member 43 is mounted on the fuselage and a ball 41 on a shaft 40 is adjustably mounted in a socket therein. The shaft 40 has a disc 39 at its upper end, a casing 36 forming part of the lifting rotor 27, 30, 34 being rotatably mounted on the disc by means of two rings of taper roller bearings 38, 38a disposed on either side of the disc. The position of the shaft 40 and thus the plane of the rotor may be varied by means of the control column 45. In a further similar embodiment the disc 39 shown in Fig. 5 is replaced by an annular ring portion which surrounds the ball 41, being supported therefrom by means of an integral shaft and overhanging cup-shaped portion. Specifications 770,873, 770,874, 770,875 and 780,754 also U.S.A. Specification 1,964,179 are referred to.
