Abstract
820,106. Variable pitch propellers. HARTZELL PROPELLER Inc. Nov. 20, 1957 [Feb. 18, 1957, March 18, 1957], No. 36184/57. Class 114. An adjustable pitch propeller comprises a hub 14 with blade sockets formed with an inwardly facing abutment 30 about the mouth thereof, a blade 10 extending radially into each socket and having an outwardly extending flange provided (by an annular recess 24) about the inner end thereof, a split blade collar 26 mounted about the inner end of the blade so as to engage the flange, there being a plate 34 engaging the butt end of the blade and secured to the collar (by screws 27) to hold the collar in place, an anti-friction bearing 28 having its outer race fitted into the socket and engaging the abutment 30 and its inner race closely surrounding the split collar 26, and piston and cylinder means 68, 58 carried by the hub 14 and connected therein (via a tube 46, a shift yoke, and pin 38) with plates 34 for varying the pitch of the propeller from full feathered pitch to lower pitch position. A nut 48 on the plate 34 bears against a friction reducing element 50 resting on a shoulder 52 formed on the hub and provides means for preloading the bearing 28. Resilient means act on the piston 68 to increase the pitch of the blades, whilst off-centre weights 114 mounted on the blades are responsive to propeller speed for reducing pitch. Said resilient means may comprise a gas entrapped in the cylinder 58, or as in Fig. 2, may comprise springs 80, 82, 84. Hydraulic fluid in the tube 46 flows through a port 78 to act on piston 68 to reduce the pitch of the blades. Should the supply of hydraulic fluid fail, said resilient means will thrust the blades to a feathered position. The tube 46 carries a latch rod 86 having a shoulder 88 adapted to cooperate with a latch pin 90 which moves out at the speed of 500 r.p.m. of the propeller and under normal circumstances moves inwardly to engage shoulder 88 whenever the propeller is brought to a halt in a normal manner.
