Abstract

Fire-proof and heat insulating coating compositions are prepared by subjecting exfoliated vermiculite granules either to water or a solvent compatible with polyvinyl acetate, rolling the granules in a wet state and incorporating with the rolled vermiculite a binder of polyvinyl acetate (described in Group IV (a)). Tests describe the application of one or more layers of the compositions to (1) aluminium plates, (2) wooden panels, (3) plaster slabs, (4) fibre-board, and (5) double-walled partitions comprising plywood panels on a wooden frame. Vermiculate.-Vermiculite for use in the above compositions may be prepared by passing the exfoliated vermiculite granules in a wet state between steel rollers, which may rotate at different speeds to give a slight drawing effect.ALSO:Coating compositions are prepared by subjecting exfoliated vermiculate granules to water or a solvent, rolling the granules whilst in a wet state and incorporating with the rolled vermiculite a binder of polyvinyl acetate, e.g. in aqueous emulsion. The compositions may contain pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide and antimony trioxide, plasticisers, e.g. tricresyl phosphate, and sodium phenyl phenate. The vermiculite granules, preferably a mixture of different granule sizes, may be passed one or more times between rollers, which may rotate at different speeds to give a drawing effect. The compositions may be used for fire-proofing and heat-insulating, and may be applied, e.g. with a spatula or brush or by spraying, to metal, e.g. iron and aluminium, wood, fibre board, cement and plaster.
