Abstract

806,278. Explosive compositions. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. May 31, 1957 [June 11, 1956], No. 17420/57; Class 9(2) A waterproof, insensitive explosive pellet comprises a symmetrical core of at least one inorganic nitrate surrounded by a continuous coating of a plasticised nitrocellulose composition, the weight of said coating being less than 15 per cent of said pellet and the average thickness of said coating being at least 5 mils. The term "inorganic nitrate" includes alkali metal and ammonium nitrates but also nitrates such as those of the alkaline earth metals which are used in special purpose explosives. The term "plasticised nitrocellulose" is used to mean a nitrocellulose having a nitrogen content of at least 11.5 per cent by weight mixed with a high-molecular 'fatty acid ester or other plasticiser. The pellets may be coated by dissolving the nitrocellulose and this plasticiser, e.g. dibutyl phthalate, in a volatile solvent or mixture of such solvents, e.g. ethyl alcohol, toluene, xylene, methyl isobutyl ketone, and introducing the pellets into a tumbling vessel in which they are sprayed with the coating solution and tumbled until they are uniformly coated. In an example, a coating solution comprising nitrocellulose (N 2 content 12 per cent), castor oil and dibutylphthalate as plasticisers in a solvent comprising a mixture of ethyl alcohol, toluene, xylene, methylisobutyl ketone, nbutanol and acetone is used to coat pellets of ammonium nitrate.
