[Also in Group XL (a)] A spray fitting for an electrostatic precipitator or washing tower comprises a withdrawable spray pipe carrying a nozzle at its inner end and a handle at its outer end, the pipe passing through a tube screwed into or otherwise secured to the wall of the treater shell or tower, the tube supporting a lever-operated gate valve through which the pipe passes, the valve being operable on withdrawal of the pipe to close the tube. The tube 23 is externally threaded at its outer end to engage one screw 32 of the valve 33, the other screw 34 of which engages a socket 35. The spray pipe 46 is screwed to a metal insert 41 moulded to a plug 40 releasably contained within the socket 35 by the handle 53 engaging a bayonet slot 54 in the socket 35 (Fig. 4). Water is supplied via an L-type port valve (not shown) to an inlet 36 co-operating with a passage 43 in the socket 35 and passage 42 in the insert 41, soft rubber sealing rings 44, 45 being provided. The socket 35, plug 40 and spray pipe 46 may be of moulded plastic material such as nylon, or the spray pipe 46 may be of steel and have a sheath 52 of e.g. polyvinyl chloride. To remove the spray fitting, the water is turned off, the plug 40 rotated to disengage the handle 53 from the slot 54, and the plug 40, pipe 46 and nozzle 47 are withdrawn, the lever 37 being immediately actuated to close the valve 33 and seal the tube 23. Spray fittings according to the invention may be arranged at different levels of and inclinations to the wall of the precipitator or washing tower.
