805,958. Blasting devices. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Dec. 19, 1956 [Jan. 3, 1956]. No. 38643/56. Class 9(1) A detonator for blasting explosives such as ammonium nitrate comprises a casing 8 of material such as bronze or aluminium containing a detonating explosive 7, e.g. RDX or pentaerythritol tetranitrate. A well 6 to receive a blasting cap (not shown) mounted in a rubber washer 5 is pressed into the explosive. The upper part 9 of the well 6 is tapered from an external diameter slightly greater than the internal diameter of the casing 8 to a diameter less that the aforesaid internal diameter and its outer surface is coated with an adhesive to form a water tight seal between the casing 8 and the well. A rubber washer 4 is inserted in the well to grip the blasting cap, when placed in position, and the washer 4 is secured by a rigid washer 3 and crimping of the well 6. The adhesive coating may be varnish, gum, asphalt, lacquer, paint, wax, tar, glue, various rubber compounds or organic polymers.
