Abstract
1,233,138. Blasting. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 27 Feb., 1970 [31 March, 1969], No. 16615/69. Heading E1F. [Also in Division F3] A method of blasting comprises positioning a downline of detonating cord 21, Fig. 3, in a shothole, loading a blasting agent 23 into the shothole and, at selected stages (a), (b) &c of the loading, slidably connecting to the down-, line a primer assembly 12, 13 and 16. The primer assembly for initiating the blasting agent comprises a priming charge 11 Fig. 1 of high explosive, a connecting length of detonating cord 13, and a connector 16 adapted to hold the detonating cord in close lengthwise proximity to a downline 21 of detonating cord while permitting it to be slidably moved along the downline. The connector 16 is formed of polyethylene and is provided with two overlapping bores 15 and 20 whereby the downline and detonating cord can be held in contact. A third bore 17 permits the end of the detonating cord to be doubled back. The end of the detonating cord is covered by a water-proof silicone-rubber composition 18 and a metal cap 19. The charge 11 has a velocity of detonation of at least 6,500 m/sec and comprises cast or pressed PETN and TNT in ratio of 40:60 to 60:40, tetryl, CTMTN, or mixtures of CTMTN and TNT. The charge is contained in a polyethylene container 12 and may consist of several smaller charges placed end to end. The charge is circular or rectangular in cross-section, and has a length to maximum cross-section dimension ratio of 3:1 to 5:1.
