Abstract

805,543. Combustion apparatus. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. Nov. 2, 1955 [Nov. 10, 1954,] No. 31354/55. Class 51 (1). [Also in Group XIII] Air required for the combustion of liquid fuel in a member 6, Fig. 1, and a chamber 8 of the apparatus shown is introduced from the atmosphere by intermittent gas puffs issuing from a nozzle 3 forming part of a combustion device comprising a chamber 1 in which fuel fed through an injector 4 is burnt in pulses, the necessary air entering through a duct 2. The liquid fuel is gravity fed through injectors 9, 10, 11, from a tank 13 and the gas issuing from the nozzle 3 comprises combustion products plus fuel from the injector 9. The injectors may be pump-fed and flame holders-such as 14, Fig. 2-may be placed downstream of them. In a modification, chamber 1, Fig. 2, has a 180 degree bend 15 such that any blow back through the duct 2 may be utilized to deliver air to the chamber 8. Additional injectors 10<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>1</SP> are provided together with an additional member 6a and flame holders 14. In another modification, the member 6, Fig. 3, which receives the exhaust gas puffs is followed by successive members 6<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>2</SP>. Injectors 9, 10, 10<SP>1</SP>, 10<SP>2</SP>, 11 are provided. A further embodiment having injectors 9, 9<SP>1</SP>, 10, 10<SP>1</SP>, 11, 11<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, has two combustion devices each discharging through a member 6, 6<SP>1</SP> into a chamber 8. In a modification of this construction, the devices discharge into a common member 6. In another modification, a steam generator has fuel injectors 9, 10, Fig. 6, and the chamber 8 accommodates water tubes 16 whilst passing through the member 6 are superheater tubes 16d. Feed water enters at 16b. In an application of the combustion apparatus to a boiler the water is heated in a tubular coil lining the wall of the member 6 and the chamber 8. The hot gases from the combustion apparatus may be used for space or fluid heating, combustion air heating or, in a boiler, for pre-heating feed water.
