Abstract

805,303. Boiler furnaces. SEGOR. Dec. 13, 1954, No. 36024/54. Class 51 (1). [Also in Group XIII] Relates to a hot-water boiler or other heating apparatus having a combustion chamber to which solid fuel is fed by gravity from a hopper and primary air is supplied under pressure in a single stream, the combustion chamber having no fire-door or other opening through which direct access to the combustion zone from the external atmosphere is obtainable. According to the invention, the ash-removal opening 28 in the wall of the apparatus lies upstream of the combustion chamber and adjacent to the path of the primary air, so that only air and not combustion gases can leak past the closure 29 of that opening. In the form shown, the boiler comprises a double-walled water jacket 1, a water space 12 through which extend flue tubes 11, and an inclined double-walled partition 3 at the bottom of a fuel hopper. A fan 6 supplies air under pressure through a chamber 7 to the ashpit below a grate 4. The charging door 14 at the top of the hopper has a gas-tight seal with its seat. Secondary combustion air may be admitted from the chamber 7 through an adjustable inlet 26. A V-shaped shutter 22 with pointed projections 24 may be operated by a lever 23 to clear the grate. A window 10 is provided. Any fumes escaping past the door 14 are drawn by chimney suction through a chamber 19 into a chamber 20 filled with glass wool or other heat insulation, past the edges of a metal sheet 18 into the smoke-box 16 which has a chimney outlet 17. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the boiler comprises three sections, a boiler section which has water spaces, a hopper section, and a third section. The three sections are connected by gas-tight connections and are surrounded by a casing. A fan supplies air through a pipe to the jacket space in the casing. It flows past a baffle to an inlet to the ashpit.
