Abstract
805,179. Valves. CROWN CORK & SEAL CO. Inc. Sept. 19, 1956 [Sept. 28, 1955], No. 28651/56. Class 135. The head 10 of a rotary filling machine includes a valve body 12 and a disc valve 14 rotatably supported thereon and operated by the filling machine, the body 12 comprising an upper portion 16 and a detachable lower portion 18 with which the containers to be filled come into sealing contact. A packing element 22, which is provided in a body recess 20, bears against the valve 14, the latter being supported on a central stem 28 that accommodates an anti-friction element 32 to ensure the valve 14 bears with sufficient pressure against the body 12 to prevent leakage whilst permitting rotation of the valve. Liquid and gas passages 31 are provided in the body 12, valve 14 and packing 22, the valve 14 sequentially moving to each of three positions wherein (1) none of the passages are aligned, (2) the gas passages only are aligned to pressurize the container, and (3) the liquid and certain gas passages are aligned to enable the gas to exhaust from the container as the liquid is admitted thereto. The packing element 22, which is formed of discs 38, 40 of rubber compound and waxed leather, respectively, is processed by a platen secured on the stem 28, the micro-finished surface of the platen forcing the leather disc 40 into the body recess; the body 12, element 22 and platen are then maintained at a temperature of 149‹ C. for thirty minutes after which they are quenched in cold water. The platen is removed and a special grease is applied to the valve surface of the leather disc; the seat of the valve 14 is lapped to a micro-finish. The packing flows radially during heating into grooves 34, 36 whereby it is retained in the valve body. The packing may be mounted in the valve 14.
