Abstract
805,098. Pipe couplings. BENDZ Ltd., and ACKERMAN, S. Feb. 19, 1957 [Nov. 19, 1955], No. 33156/55. Class 99(1). A short length of tube 15 has at each its ends an internal circumferentially extending groove 22 which receives a rubber, &c. sealing ring 24 and in its central position spaced axially inwardly from its ends an internal abutment 17 which does not impede fluid flow and acts as a stop for pipe ends 23 entered axially into the tube. The groove 22 has a radial depth within the range of 0À7 of the sealing ring diameter to just less than the sealing ring diameter and between the side walls of each groove and its associated ring is an overall clearance of 0À3 to 0À1 of the ring, diameter measured parallel to the axis of the tube. The coupling member may be made from thin walled copper tube preferably of drawn seamless form and the wall thickness recommended is from 19 S.W.G. (0À04 inch) to 12 S.W.G. (0À104 inch) for tubes of ¢ inch to 6 inches diameter. The coupling is made by expanding the outer ends of a short length of tube in a die, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown) by a forced-in plug, the central part of the tube being held in restraint, the grooves being shaped by further pressure from an additional plug.
