Abstract

The invention comprises dye developers of the formula: <FORM:0804975/IV (c)/1> where D1 is an organic radical containing an aryl nucleus substituted by at least two substituents selected from hydroxyl, amino, and substituted amino so that the resulting compound is capable of developing exposed silver halide, R2 is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, R3 is an aryl group substituted by hydroxy ortho to the carboxamido group and is preferably naphthyl, lower alkyl is alkyl of 1-5 carbon atoms, and n is 0 or 1, and a process of making them by coupling a diazotized amino R2NH2 with a compound of the formula <FORM:0804975/IV (c)/2> In examples: (1) diazotized 2,5-dimethoxy aniline is coupled with the 51-monobenzoate of 2 - hydroxy - N - (21,51 - dihydroxyphenyl) - 3 - naphthamide, followed by hydrolysis of the benzoyl radical; (2) diazotized 2,5-diethoxy-4-benzamido-aniline is coupled with the same naphthamide. Other values of D1 are 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-, 1 - hydroxy - 4 - aminophenyl -, 1 - hydroxy - 4 - methylaminophenyl -, 1,2,3 - trihydroxyphenyl - 1 - hydroxy - 2 - aminonaphthyl.
