Abstract
The invention comprises dye developers of the formul : <FORM:0804973/IV (c)/1> wherein A represents an anthraquinone nucleus, D1 represents an organic radical containing an aryl nucleus substituted by at least two substitutuents selected from hydroxyl, amino, and substituted amino groups so that the resulting compound is capable of developing exposed silver halide, Q represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, or, when the substituents on the aryl nucleus of D1 are hydroxyl groups, Q may also be acyl (which may be aliphatic or aromatic), Z is a bivalent organic radical containing at least one methylene group, m is a positive integer less than 5, and n is 2, 3, or 4, and each Y may be hydrogen, halogen, amino, alkyl, aryl, nitro, alkylamino, arylamino, aryloxy, alkoxy, hydroxyl, sulphonamido, carboxamido, carboxy, sulpho, <FORM:0804973/IV (c)/2> or <FORM:0804973/IV (c)/3> and a process of making a slightly wider class, including the above, and defined by the same formul , but where n may also be 1, by reacting in a manner depending upon the substituent to be replaced by an amine radical, a compound of the anthraquinone series containing at least one sulpho, halogen, nitro, hydroxy, alkoxy, or amino substituent with a primary amine of the formula D1-Z-NH2 or D1-NH2. When the substituent to be replaced is amino or hydroxy, the anthraquinone compound may be employed as leuco compound, the initial product being oxidized. In examples, leucoquinizarin is condensed with (1) aminohydroquinone monobenzoate, followed by hydrolysis; (2) 4-(beta-aminoethyl)-catechol, followed by benzoylation with benzoyl chloride. Products specifically claimed are 1,4-bis-(21,51-dihydroxyanilino) - anthraquinone, 1,5 - bis - (21,51 - dihydroxyanilino) - 4,8 - dihydroxy - anthraquinone, 1,4 - bis - [beta - (31,41 - dihydroxyphenyl) - ethylamino] - anthraquinone and its N-monobenzoyl derivative, 1,4-bis-[beta - (21,51 - dihydroxyphenyl) - ethylamino]-anthraquinone and its N-monobenzoyl derivative, 1 - chloro - 4 - [beta - (21,51 - dihydroxyphenyl) - ethylamino] - anthraquinone.
