Class 100(4) A typewriter tabulating device with spaced denominational stops co-operating with tabulating stops settable on the carriage has the stops carried along a helix by a rotatable cylinder, to which they are rigidly secured, under the control of tabulation keys. The denominational stops 5a-5d are in a helix around a cylinder 6 having an integral toothed wheel 12 which is capable of rotation and sliding on its own axis 7 and of rotation with an arm 8 about a sector 11 mounted on a shaft 9. The keys 22a-22n are attached to small plates 25a-25n stamped to form heels 26a-26n which engage a bar 28 and, with the exception of cancelling key 22n, to form heels 21a, 21b of increasing length to engage a bar 18. Depression of a key acting through a heel 26 and linkage 30-32 raises a rod 34 which engages a nipple 35 of a strap 36 which through its arm 36a releases a pawl 39 from an escapement wheel 42 and at the same time through a spring coupling 43, strap 36 rocks another strap 44 to engage a pinion 45 with a wheel 46 integral with the wheel 42 to connect a brake cylinder 47 thereto. Also at the same time, rocking of the strap 36 frees a pawl 48 holding the spindle 7 of the cylinder 6 and through a spring 38 acts on a strap 10 to rock the assembly 8, 9, 10 thus raising the cylinder 6 until a stop 56 is engaged and rolling the wheel 12 over the sector 11 to rotate the cylinder on the spindle 7 so that the unitary stop 5a is positioned in the path of a set carriage stop. Depression of a key, except the unitary stop selective key 22a, acts by its other heel 21 on a bar 18 and through linkage 17-14 acting on the sector 11 rotates the cylinder 6 an amount to bring one of the stops 5b-5d to the operative position depending on the length of the heel 21 of the key used. Engagement of a stop 5a-5d thus set, by a carriage stop, causes slight movement of the cylinder 6 to the left on its spindle 7 which movement by an adjustable screw 51 causes a lever 22 to free the rod 34 from the nipple 35 and allows the spring 38 to expand thus returning the strap 36 which re-engages the pawl 39 with the escapement wheel 42 to support the tabulating stops during the shock of arresting the carriage. At the same time, the cylinder 6 is freed to return to its initial position where the pawl 48 re-hooks the spindle 7 and the bars 18, 28 and stops 5a-5d are also returned to their initial positions. To return the set carriage stop the key 22n is depressed and through its heel 21n rocks the sector 11 sufficiently for a cam fixed to the wheel 12 to restore the stop.
