Y 10 all whom t may concern Be it known that l, Mansrrnnn C. CRAW- LnY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rutherford, county of Bergen, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in rTypewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in typewriting machines, and more particularly to means for moving the platen carriage to and arresting it at predetermined points.
Une of the objects of the invention is to provide tabulating mechanism embodying column selecting stops and adjustable tabulator stops, and denominational selecting means adapted to cooperate with either set of stops.
Another object of the present invention is to provide tabulating mechanism embodying a denominational selector traveling with the platen carriage, adjustable tabulator stops and column selecting stops normally out of the path of the denominational selector, and independent lrey controlled means for shifting the stops whereby either a selected column stop or the series of tabulating stops may be moved into the path of the denominational selector.
A further object is to provide a denominational selector traveling with the platen carriage, key-operated means for shifting the selector relatively to the carriage, adjustable tabulator stops and `coliunn selecting stops mounted on the frame of the machine, and means whereby the selector may cooperate with either set of stops at will.
Another object is to provide tabulating mechanism embodying a carriage-arresting stop, denominational selecting' means, column selecting stops adapted to cooperate with the denominational selecting` means, and means operable through `the instrumentality of the denominational selecting` means for actuating the carriage-arresting stop.
Another object of the invention is to provide tabulating mechanism embodying a carriage-arresting stop, a denominational selector, adjustable tabulator stops, and connections between the `denominational selector and the carriage-arresting stop for actuating said stop when the denominational selector engages a tabnlator stop.

carriage-arresting stop traveling with the platen carriage adapted to engage said rack, column-selecting stops and adjustable tabulator stops, a denominational selector traveling with the carriage, independent key-operated means for presentingeither a columnselecting stopl or the series oftabulator stops in the path of the selector, and connections between the selector and carriage-arresting stop for actuating the lcarriage-arresting stop when the'selector engages either a column-selecting stop or a tabulator stop.
A further important object of the invention is to provide means for arresting the platen carriage at predetermined points, embodying a carriage-arresting stop, tabulating point selecting means adapted to actuate said stop, and marginal point determining means for actuating said stop.
i Another object of the invention is to provide a marginal point indicator adjustable transversely of the machine, a trio adjustable with said indicator and operable by the carriage, a carriage-arresting stop traveling with the lplaten carriage, and connections between said trip and stop for actuating the stop.
A further important object of the invention is to provide key-controlled power mechanism for driving the platen carriage in either direction of its travel to the point selected by the tabulating mechanism.
rlhe tabulating mechanism herein shown and described has certain features in common with the tabulating mechanism forming the subject matter of my co-pending application Serial No, 591,582, in which the features common to both applications are broadly claimed, the present application being subordinate to said application Serial No. 591,582.

The tabulating and margin stop mechanism illustrated is shown embodied in a power-operated typewriting machine of the type disclosed in my Patent No. 1,455,112, dated May 15, 1923, and my co-pending application Serial No. 188,770, filed August 29, 1917, and in which the platen carriage is adapted to be driven in either direction by key-'controlled power mechanism such as disclosed in my co-pending application Serial No. 188,772, filed August 29, 1917. It will be obvious, however, that the tabulating and margin stop mechanism may be employed in connection with other forms of power-operated typewriting machines, as well as with machines which are not power driven, and also that the tabulating and margin stop mechanism may be employed in connection with machines having any form of carriage feed and in which the carriage is returned by hand or otherwise.
Referring to the various parts by numerals, 1 designates the drive shaft which is continuously rotated by means of a suitable electric motor connected by belt 2 with a driving pulley 3 fixed on the drive shaft. The drive sha-ft 1 is journalled in bearings 4 on the frame of the machine. Loosely mounted on the drivcshaft between spaced collars are two oppositely beveled gears 5 and G. Keyed to the drive shaft 1 between said gears is a shift-able clutch head 7, which is provided at ,its opposite ends with clutch members 8 and 9 provided on their outer faces with frustro-conical clutch surfaces which are adapted to engage corresponding surfaces formed on the inner faces of the beveled gears 5 and 6. Engaging the gears 5 and 6 is a beveled pinion 10 fixed to the low r end of a vertical. carriage driving sha-ft 11. On the upper end of the shaft 11 is fixed a carriage driving pinion 12 meshing with the carriage feed rack 13. T he feeding mechanism, which operates through the driving pinion 12, is not shown herein, as that mechanism is fully disclosed in my aforesaid co-pending application Serial No. 188,770.
T he clutch head 7 is adapted to be shifted in opposite directions through mechanism controlled by two key-operated levers 14- and 14;21 pivotally supported intermediate their ends on a transversely extending pivot bar lab suitably supported in the frame of the machine. rlhe rear end of lever 1am engages the substantially horizontal arm of a bell-crank lever 15 pivoted in the main frame of the machine with its other arm extending upwardly from the pivot. Connected to this upwardly extending arm of the bell-crank lever 15 is an inwardly extending substantially horizontal link 1G the inner end of which is provided with the upwardly and outwardly inclined slot 17. Pivoted in the main frame directly below the carriage drive shaft 11 is a bell-crank lever 18 having a downwardly extending arm 18 and an arm 18b which extends'horizontally transversely of the machine, substantially on a line with the pivot of the bell-crank lever. The depending arm 18"L is provided with a forwardly extending horizontal pin 19 which extends through the slot 17 in the link 16. Said arm 18"L of the bell-crank lever is also provided with a stop pin 20 below the pin 19, which is adapted to be engaged by a hook-like shoulder 21 formed on the lowerl edge of the inner end of link 16 when said link is moved laterally through the bellcrank lever 15 and the lever 14a. In the main frame directly below the clutch head 7 is pivoted a clutch shifting lever 22, the upper end of which carries a roller 23 which engages the inner surfaces of the clutch members 8 and 9, as shown more clearly in Fig. 10. The lower end of the clutch shifting lever 22 is forked, and the arm 18a of the bell-crank lever 18 is provided with a forwardly extending pin 24 which entends between the branches of the forked end of said depending arm 18a, so that the clutch shifting lever will be swung on its pivot when the bell-crank lever 18 is moved. The lever lll engages the horizontal arm of a bell-crank lever 25, the upwardly extending arm of which is connected to the cuter end of an inwardly extending link 28. rPhe link 26 is provided with a slot 27 which corresponds with slot 17 in link 16. rlhe pin 19 extends through the slot 27 in link 26 as well as through the slot 17 in link 16. The link 26 is provided at its inner end with a hooklike shoulder 28 corresponding with the shoulder 21 formed on link 16, and which is adapted to engage the stop pin 2() when the lever 14 is operated.
The upwardly turned forward end of. the lever 14 is pivotally connected with the lower end of a key stem 36 on the upper end of which is supported a key 36. rlhe upwardly turned forward end of the lever 14h is pivotally connected with the lower end of a key stem 37a, on the upper end of which is supported a key 37. It is manifest that by depressing the key 37 the link 16 will be moved inwardly by the lever 14, and the slot 17 in said link will guide the inner end of the link downwardly to cause the shoulder 2l to engage the stop pin 2O on the bellc'ranl: lever 18. Further inward movement of the linlr 16 will then swing the bellcranl; lever 18 on its pivot, causing the pin 24 to move the gear shifting lever 22 and thrust the clutch member 9 into engagement with the clutch surface on the inner face of the gear 5. lt'will also be obvious that by depressing the rey 36 the bell-crank lever 1S will be moved in the opposite direction through the lever i4, bell-crank lever 25 and linlr 26, thereby bringing the clutch member 8 into engagement with the clutch surface formed on the inner face of the gear 6. lt will be obvious that when the ley 37 .depressed the power mechanism will be connected to drive the carriage in the direction of its return movement or toward the righthand side of the machine, and that when the lrey 35 is depressed the power mechanism will drive the carriage toward the lefthand side of the machine or in the direction of its .letter-spacing movement.
@n the carriage drive shaft 'll is mounted a la" detent wheel 29 which is rigidly secured to the beveled gear 10 to rotate therewith. Mounted on a suitable pivot is a detent bell-crank lever 30, one arm of which carries a roller 3l adapted to engage the teeth of the star wheel 29 to normally hold the shaft ll against rotation. The other arm of the detent lever 30 is in position to be engaged by the upper end of a release lever 32 pivotally supported on the main frame, the lower end of said lever being foiineclwvith two cam surfaces and 34 adapted to be engaged by a roller 35 mounted on the free end of the horizontal arm 1S of the bell-crank lever 1S. lt will be obvious that when the bell-crank lever 18 is swung on its pivot the release lever will be moved to swing the detent lever 3() and move the roller 8l out of engagement with the teeth of the star wheel 29. 'lhe movement of the bell-crank lever in one direction will cause the roller 35 to engage the cam surface 355 on the release lever, and movement of said bell-crank in the opposite direction will cause the roller 35 to engage the cam surface 84 on the release lever, so that the release lever 30 will be swung on its pivot by the operation of either one of the levers 14 or 14a. By releasing` the roller 3l from the detent wheel 29 the carriage drive shaft will be free to be driven. in either direction from the drive shaft l.
'lhe platen carriage 38 is adapted to travel transversely of the frame of the machine, being supported adjacent its rear edge on suitable antifriction bearings 39 and 40. Any suitable mechanism may be provided for imparting a step-by-step letter-feed movement to the carriage, such as that described and shown in my copending application Serial No. 188,770, filed August 29, 1917. A stationary tabulator rack 4l is rigidly held to the frame of the machine .at the rear of the platen carriage 38, and a stop 42 provided with oppositely extending projections 42fL and 42b adapted to engage between the teeth of the rack 4l is pivotally held to the carriage 38 by a screw 43. The carriage-arresting stop 42 is provided with a rearwardly extending projection 44 entending between the adjacent lower ends of two depending arms 45 and 46 formed on a carriage-arresting-stop-actuating plate 47. rlhe carriagc-arresting-stop actuator 47 is mounted on the platen c; rriage 38 to travel therewith and is shiftable relatively to the carriage transversely of the machine. The plate 47 is held to the carriage by means of two screws 4S passing through elongated slots 49 in the plate and threaded into a part of the platen carriage. The plate 47 is normally held in the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 by means of two coil springs 50.
A denominational selector 5l is held to the platen carriage to travel. therewith and is shiftable relatively to the carriage in the direction of the letter-spacing movement of the carriage, and also fore-and-aft of the machine. The denominational selector is slidably held to a centering plate 52 by means of a pair of headed screws 53 which pass through an elongated slot in the denominational selector and are threaded into the plate 52 substantially midway the length of said plate. The plate 52 is formed with elongated slots 54 at each end thereof and is shiftably held to a denominational selector actuating plate 55 by means of a pair of headed screws 56 passing through the elongated slots 54 in the plate 52 and threaded into the denominational selector actuating plate rlhe denominational selector supporting and guiding plate 52 is normally centered relatively to the plate 55 by means of a pair of coil springs 57 connected at their inner ends to said plate 52 and at their outer ends to the plate 55. The denominational selector actuating plate 55 is slidably held to the platen carriage to move relatively thereto in the direction of the letter-spacing movement of the carriage, by means of a pair of headed screws 59 passing through elongated slots 60 in the plate 55 and threaded into the rear transverse member of the platen carriage.
The denominational selector operating plate 55 is provided with a depending pin 58, the lower end of which engages in a spiral groove 5l formed in a cylinder 62 held to a shaft 63 to rot-ate with said shaft and to slide longitudinally thereof. The opposite ends of the spirally grooved cylinder 62 are engaged by a pair of rearllO wardly extending brackets Gil rigidly held to the platen carriage 38 whereby said cylinder or sleeve G2 is adapted to be moved along the shaft 63 when the carriage is shifted in either direction of its travel. The pin 58 depending from the plate 55 is normally located at the right-hand end of the spiral groeve Gl in the cylinder or sleeve 62, and the plate 55 is normally centered relatively to the platen carriage 38.
The denominational selector shifting plate 55 and the plate 52 and denominational selector 5l carried thereby are adapted to be shifted bodily and in unison with each other relatively to the carriage in the direction of the letter-spacing moven'ient of the riage, relatively different distances, through the instrumentality of a series of nine denominational-point selecting keys Each of the denoininational-point selecting` keys 65 is supported on a vertically-reciprocable stem 66, passing through suitable apertures in a stepped finishing plate 67. Each key stem 66 is provided with a shoulder GS. Vlhe shoulder 68 on the right-hand key stem (3G is located farthest from the lower end of the key stem and the shoulder on the left-hand key stein G6 is located nearest to the lower end of the key stein. All of the key stems are adapted to be depressed the same distance and are adapted to he returned to their normal positions by suitable spiral springs G9. The lower ends of the key stems 66 pass through suitable apertures in a rocking plate 70, and the shoulders 68 formed on the key stems are adapted to engage the upper surface of the plate ad- `jacent the forward edge thereof and rock said plate relatively different distances about its pivot 7l. rlhe rear edge of the plate 7 O is rigidly held to a bar 72 which is pivotally supported at its opposite ends on the pivot screws 7l which pass through a pair of oppositely disposed vertically extending plates 7 8 suitably supported in the main traine of the machine. The denominational-pointselecting keys 65 are provided with denominational indicating numerals l, l0, 1GO, ieee, meer terreau, recaer/a renounce, and lOOOOJlOO, progressively from right to left of the keyboard. The right-hand key (S5 is adapted to rock the plate to move the denominational selector 5l one letter space relatively to the carriage; the second key is adapted to move the denominational selector two letter spaces7 and the remaining keys are adapted to move the denominational selector progressively up to nine letter spaces. The plate 7 O is formed at its forward edge with a linger 74 adjacent the right-hand end of the plate, adapted to engage and depress the upwardly turned forward end of a lever 7 5 which is pivotally supported intermediate its ends on the transverse pivot rod 1lb. The lever 75 ard the plate 7 0 are normally held in the positions shown in Fig. l by a suitable coil spring 7 6, and the depending rear end of the lever 75 is pivotally connected at 77 with the lower end of an upwardly extending lever 7 S. rlhe lever 78 is formed at its upper end with a rack 7 9 meshing with a gear 8O liXed on the right-hand end of shaft 63, upon which the spirally grooved sleeve 62 is mounted. The upper end of the lever 78 is guided by a pin 8l passing through an elongated slot 82 in the upper Vend of the lever and held to the oute side of one of the brackets 83 in which tie shaft G3 is `iournalled. lt will be obvious that in whatever letter-spacing position the carriage may be the sleeve 62 may be rotated through the medium of any one of the keys 65 and the operating connections above described to shift the denominational selector the desired number of letter spaces relatively to the platen carriage to select the desired denominational point.
The denominational selector 5l is adapte'L to cooperate with any one of a series of column selecting stops 84, or with any one of a series of variahly adjustable aligned tabulator stops 85 to select the desired denominational point within the columnar lield of the stops. The column select-ing stops and the adjustable tabulator stops are all normally out of the path of the denominational selector and are adapted to be moved independently into the path of the denominational selector through independent keycontrolled mechanisms. The stops 85 are detachably and adjustably held to a notched tahulator-stop bar 86 in the usual manner. 'll'ie tabulator-stop bar 86 is journalled at its left-hand end in one of the brackets S3, and is journalled at its right-hand end in a bracket 87, and is normally held in the position shown in Figs. l, 2 and 5. The bar 86 is adapted to he rocked to move the dependends of the tabulator stops downwardly und forwardly simultaneously into the path of one of the inclined faces 5l formed on the denominational selector 5l, by depressing the key 88 which is supported on the upper end of a vertically' reciprocable key stem 89 passing through the plate 67 and pivotally connected at its lower end to the upwardly turned forward end of a lever 90. rllhe lever 90 is pivotally hung intermediate its ends on the pivot rod leb, and is pivotally connected at its rear end with the lower end of an upwardly extending link 9i, rlhe link 91 is pivotally connected at its upper end with the lower end of an angular rock arm 92, the upper end of which is fixed on the left-hand end of the tabulator-stop bar 86. rllhe key 88 and the operating connections between said key and the tabulatorstop bar are normally held in the positions shown in the drawings by means of a suitlll() lll) lill) able coil spring 93 coiled about the key stem 89 and interposed between the key 88 and the plate 67.
The eight column-selecting stops 84 are held to a cylinder 94 fixed on a. shaft 95 eX- tending directly below the bar 86 and `iournalled at its opposite ends in the brackets 83. rThe cylinder 94 is of substantially the same length as the scale of the machine and the stops 84 are arranged in a spiral series about said cylinder. The stops 84 are spaced apart 40O circumferentially of the cylinder 94, and are spaced apart longitudinally of the cylinder a distance equal to ten letter spaces on a scale. rlhe O space between the first and the last of the spiral series of stops 84 is normally at the upper side of the cylinder as shown in Fig. 5, thus providing an unobstructed passage for the downwardly and forwardly bent end of the denominational selector 51. The downwardly and forwardly bent end of the denominational selector is formed with inclined faces 61b adapted to engage a column selecting stop when the cylinder 94 is rot-ated to present one of said stops in the path of the denominational selector. The cylinder 94 is adapted to be rotated relatively different distances to present any desired column-selecting stop 84 in the path of the denominational selector, through the medium of a series of eight keys 96. Each of the keys 96 is supported on a key stem 97 passing through apertures in the plate 67 and in the forward edge of a rocking plate 98. The key stems 97 are formed with shoulders 99 similar to the shoulders 68 on the key stems 66, the shoulder 99 on the rightehand key stem 97 being farthest from the plate 98, and the shoulder 99 on the lefthand key stem 97 being nearest to the plate 98. The key stems are normally held in the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 8 by suitable coil springs 100 coiled about the key stems 97 and interposed between the keys 96 and the plate 67. The plate 98 is held at its rear edge to a bar 101 which is pivotally held at its ends to the plate 73 by pivot screws 102, Plate 98 is provided at its righthand end adjacent its forward edge with a depending finger 103 engaging the upwardly turned end of a lever 104 pivotally hung on the transverse pivot rod 105 and normally held in the positionshown in the drawings by means of a suitable spring similar to the spring 76 connected with the lever 75. The downwardly turned rear end of the lever 104 is pivotally connected with the lower end of an upwardly extending lever 106 which is formed at its upper end with a rack 107 meshing with a gear 108 fixed on the shaft 95, upon which the cylinder 94 is mounted. ydhe upper end of the lever 106 is formed with an elongated slot 109 through Vwhich the shaft 95 extends, whereby the upper end of the lever 106 is guided and the rack 107 is held in mesh with the gear 108. The keys 96 are marked with suitable indieating numerals corresponding to points on the scale of the machine, such as 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80, and the lirst stop of the series of column-selecting stops 84 is so located on the cylinder as to engage the de nominational selector and arrest the carriage at the point 10 on the scale of the machine when the right-hand column-selecting stop key 96 is depressed. It will be obvious that by pressing the selected key 96 the plate 98 will be rocked a suflicient distance to rotate the cylinder 94 and present the desired column-selecting stop 84 in the path of one of the inclined faces 51b formed on the denominational selector.
When one of the inclined faces 51EL or 51b of the denominational selector 51 engages a tabulator stop or a column-selecting stop 84, it willbe obvious that a slight additional movement of the carriage under the influence of the power driving mechanism heretofore described will force the denominational selector in the direction of the movement of the carriage relatively to the engaged stop, whereupon the selector will be shifted bodily forwardlyof the machine. owing to the cam action between the inclined face thereof and the engaged stop. This forward movement of the denominational selector 51 will force the dog 110, formed on the forward end of the denominational selector, between the two adjacent teeth 111 formed on the plate 47, thus locking the plate 47 against further movement with the platen carriage, owing to the engagement of one of the straight faces 51c of the rear end of the denominational selector with the stop. @wing to the pin-and- slot connections 48 and 49 between the plate 47 and the platen` carriage 38, it will be observed that the platen carriage may continue to move under the influence of the power driving mechanism for a short distance after the denominational selector has locked the plate 47 against further movement in unison with the carriage. This relative movement between the platen carriage and the plate 47 causes a relative movement between the traveling carriage-arresting stop 42 and the depending arms 45 and 46 formed on the plate 47, causing the pin 44 on the stop 42 to engage either the stop face 46a on the arm 45 or the stop face 46a on the arm 46, according to the direction of movement of the carriage, thus rocking the stop on its pivot 43 and moving the projection 42a or the projection 42", as the case may be, into engagement with the stationary rack 41 and locking the carriage against further movement under the influence of the power fdriving mechanism.
W'hen a column-selecting stop or a tabulator stop is engaged by the denominational CII selector without previously depressing one of the denominational selecting keys 65, the dog on the denominational selector is adapted to engage between the two righthand teeth on the plate 47, and when the right-hand or units denominational selecting key is depressed the dog 110 is adapted to engage between the second and third teeth on the plate 47, and when the left-hand denominational point selecting key is depressed the dog 110 is adapted to engage between the tenth and eleventh teeth on the plate 47, or nine letter spaces from the decimal point.
Extending transversely of the machine in front of the carriage is a rock shaft 112 ournalled at its opposite ends in suitable supports 113 held to the main frame of the machine. A sleeve 114 is mounted on the rock shaft 112 to rock with said shaft and to slide longitudinally thereof, said sleeve carrying a key or lin 115 engaging in a longitudinally extending groove 116 formed in the shaft 112. The sleeve 114 is adjustable longitudinally on shaft 112 through a marginal-point indicator 117 held to said sleeve to move transversely of the machine therewith and to rotate relatively thereto. The marginalpoint indicator 117 is formed with a pointer 118 adapted to move over the face of the letter-space scale plate 119 which is held to the supports or brackets 113, The marginal indicator 117 is also formed with a stop face 120 adapted to engage between teeth or notches 121 formed on the lower edge of the scale plate and registering with the graduat-ions of the scale, said indicator 117 being normally forced upwardly to hold the stop face 12() in engagement with said teeth 121, by means of a suitable spring 122 held to the sleeve 114. The sleeve 114 is formed with a rearwardly extending arm 123, the free end of which is formed with a laterally extending inclined portion 124 lying in the path of a roller 125 held to the front transverse bar 38a of the platen carriage 38, substantially midway the length thereof. The roller 125 travels along a transversely eX- tending track 126 held to the supports 113, and is adapted to engage the inclined face 124 on the arm 123 as the carriage approaches the end of its return movement and to thus depress said arm and rock the shaft 112. A rock ari-n 127 is rigidly held to the shaft 112 adjacent the right-hand end of said shaft, and the lower end of said rock arm is pivotally connected with the forward end of a horizontal rearwardly extending link 128 which is pivotally connected at its rear end with an upwardly extending rod or arm 129. rlhe upper end of the rod 129 is secured to the rear edge of a rocking plate 130. rllhe plate 130 is formed at its opposite ends adjacent its rear edge, with ears 131, and is pivotally supported on the brackets 83 by suitable pins 1 ,semer 132 extending through said brackets and through the ears 131. The plate 130 is formed with a rack 1.33 at its forward edge, and it will be obvious that when the arm 123 is depressed by the roller 125 said rack 133 will be moved upwardly, thus causing a depending tooth 134 formed on the depending arm 46 on the carriage-arresting-stopactuating plate 47 to engage between adjacent teeth on the rack 133, thereby locking the plate 47 against further movement with the platen carriage. 1t will be obvious that when the plate 47 is locked against movement by the rack 133, a further return movement of the carriage will cause the stop face 45a to Vengage the pin 44 on the carriage-arresting stop 42 and rock the dog 42a into engagement with the stationary rack 41, thus arresting the carriage at the selected marginal point.
lVliet I claim is:
1. 1n a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a denominational selector shiftably mounted on the carriage,
key-controlled means for shifting the selector relatively to the carriage in the direction of the letter-spacing movement thereof a distance equal to one or more letter spaces, a series of aligned stops supported independently of the carriage and adjustable relatively to each other longitudinally of the path of movement of the carriage, a second series of uniformly spaced stops arranged xed distances apart longitudinally of the path of movement of the carriage, a key operatively connected to shift the first series of stops simultaneously into the path of movement of the denominational selector, independent key-operated means for selectively positioning either of the second series of stops in the path of the denomi national selector, a rack supported independently of the carriage, and a carriagearresting stop movable through theinstrumentality of the denominational selector into engagement with the rack upon engagement of the selector with any stop of either series of stops.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen. carriage, of means for moving the same continuously a plurality of letter spaces, a denominational selector shift-ably mounted on the carriage, key-operated means for advancing the selector relatively to the carriage a desired number of letter spaces, Ya series of adjustable aligned .tabulator stops normally out of the path of said selector', means for shifting said stops simultaneously into the path of movement of the selector, a series of columnselecting stops spaced uniform distances apart, means for presenting either of said uniformly'spaced stops in the path of the selector, and means operatively connected with the selector for arresting the carriage lll() tio upon engagement of the selector with a stop ol' either series.
3. ln a tabulating mechanism for a writing machine having a traveling paper carriage, the combination of column-point determiningv means and denominational-order determining,` means arranged to be interengaged by traveling movement of the carriage, denominational keys for movingthe denominational-order determining; means longitudinally of the path of travel of the carriage varyingd distances in accordance with the value of the key actuated, and means put into action by interengagement or the column-point determining means and denominational-order determining means for arresting the carriage.
el. labulatingmechanism for typewriting machines, comprising a platen carriage, a denominational-point determining" device mounted on the carriage to travel therewith, a series of keys operatively connected to advance said device relatively to the carriage varying numbers of letter spaces, a series of stops settable different numbers of letter spaces apart, a second series of stops spaced equal numbers of letter spaces apart, means for simultaneously shifting the first series of stops into and out of the path of said device, a series of stop-selecting keys operatively connected with the second series of sLops toposition either of said stops in vthe path of said device, and means operable by the denominational-point determining` device for arresting1 the carriage upon en- `sagement of the device with a stop of either series.
5. Tabulating' mechanism for typewriting machines, comprising` a platen carriage, a denominational-point determining` device mounted on the carriage to travel therewith, a series of keys operatively connected to advance said device relatively to the carriage varying numbers of letter spaces, a series ot stops settable dillerent numbers of letterV spaces apart, a second series of stops spaced equal numbers of letter spaces apart, means for simultaneously shifting the iirst series of stops into and out of the path oi' said device, a series of stop-selecting keys operatively connected with the second series of stops to position either of said stops in the path of said device, means operable by the denominational-point determining device for arresting the carriage upon engagement of the device with a stop of either series, power mechanism for moving the carriage in either direction, and key-operated means for releasing the carriage and causing said power mechanism to drive the carriage in the proper direction to the selected point.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of aframe, a platen carriage movable transversely of the iframe, key-controlled power-operated means `for driving the can riage continuously through a plurality of letter spaces in either direction, a denomi national-point determining device movable with the carriage, means for selectively advancing said device one or more letter spaces relatively to the carriage, a series of relatively adjustable tabulator stops supported independently of the carriage, means `lor simultaneously shifting` said stops into and out of the path of said device, and carriage-arresting means operable by said device when the device strikes a stop.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a frame, a platen carriage movable transversely of the frame, key-controlled power-operated means for driving the carriage continuously through a plurality of letter spaces in either direction, a denominational-point determining device movable with the carriage, means for selectively advancing said device one or more letter spaces relatively to the carriage, a series of selectively settable stopsspaced an equal number oi"- letter spaces apart, key-operated means Jior setting any desired one of said stops in the path of the denominational-point determining device, and carriage-arresting means operable by said device when the device strikes a stop.
8. ln a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage and tabulating mechanism associated with the carriage, said mechanism comprising' a key-set denominational-point selector mounted on the carriage, a shii'table carriage-arresting stop mounted on the carriage, a series of relatively adjustable tabulator stops mounted independently of the carriage, means for shifting the tabulator stops simultaneously into and out of the path or" said selector, a rack supported independently oi the car'- riage, and means connecting said carriagearresting,` stop and selector for moving the stop into engagement with the rack when the selector strikes a tabulator stop.
9. ln a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage and tabulatinq' mechanism associated with the carriage, said mechanism comprising` a key-set denominational-point selector mounted on the carriage, a shilftable carriage-arresting; stop mounted on the carriage, a series oi column selecting stops spaced ten. letter spaces apart, key-operated means for setting any desired one of said stops in the path of said de nominational-point selector, and connections between the selector and carriage-arresting,T stop for actuating said carriagearresting; stop when the selector engages a set stop.
10. in a typewriting;- machine, the combination of' a frame, a carriage movable transversely oi2 the frame, key-controlled poweroperated means for driving; the carriage in either direction transversely of the frame to a selected point, independently adjustable tabulator stops, column selecting stops, au adjustable margin-determining device, and carriage-arresting means adapted to cooperate with either the tabulator stops, column selecting stops, or margin-determining device.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a denominational selector mounted on the carriage, means for shifting the selector different distances longitudinally of the carriage, a series of column selecting stops, means for setting any desired stop in the path ci? the selector, power means for moving the carriage at a single run from any position until the selector engages a set stop, and means operable upon engagement of the selector with a stop for arresting the carriage.
22. ln a typeivriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a series of stops mounted independently of the carriage, a selectively settalble denominational-point determining device mounted on the carriage, carriage-arresting means operable by said device upon engagement thereof With one of said stops, and marginal-point determining means also adapted to actuate said carriagea-rresting means.
23. ln a typeivriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a series of column selecting stops moiuited independently of the carriage, a selectively settable denomina-tional-point determining device mounted on the carriage adapted to engage a set stop, an adjustable marginal-point determining trip operable by the carriage, and a single carriage-arresting means controlled by both of said devices.
