Material confined beween walls 5 on a conveyer 3 which is loaded continuously but which delivers intermittently, e.g. to mine cars or to a feed weigher, is trimmed by a scraper conveyer 2. The conveyer 3 may comprise an endless belt or a plate conveyer or scrapers moving over a fixed platform and the material is delivered either directly on to the end of the conveyer 3 or, as illustrated, through the lower run of the scraper 2 from a laterally disposed shoot 4 mounted beneath a portion of the upper run of the conveyer 2 carried by shaped guides 11. The conveyers 2, 3 are driven independently from motors A, B. Two systems similar to that shown can be mounted side by side and fed through selectively operated gates in the shoot 4 so that one of the systems serves for delivering coal to mine cars while the other serves to store dirt.
