Abstract

804,609. Heating liquids by electricity. HAWKINS & CO., Ltd., L. G. Oct. 5, 1956 [Oct. 5, 1955], No. 28374/55. Class. 39(3) [Also in Group VI] Automatic electrically heated apparatus for making beverages comprises an electrically heated boiler 1 detachably mounted on a movable platform 3 with a heating element 2 controlled by a positionresponsive switch actuated by movement of the boiler which delivers its contents when boiling, means being provided for regulating the instant after the liquid has boiled at which the position-responsive switch is operated to open the circuit to the boiler element 2 thereby regulating the amount of liquid delivered from the boiler. The boiling liquid is expelled into a tea pot or the like through tube 6 connected to the lid 7 which is held in steam tight relationship to the boiler by a stirrup 8. As shown, platform 3 is pivoted on a pivot 4 secured within a base 5 and carries, at one end, a casing 9 containing the position-responsive switch and a buzzer. A manual on/off switch 10 on base 5 controls the electric supply from cable 11 and the boiler 1 is connected to the control box by a plug and socket coupling 12. The lower portion 3a of platform 3 which is connected thereto by spacers 3b has a bar 13 secured to one side on which a weight 15 is slidable which controls the amount of water which is evaporated from the boiler before the platform tips and switches off the current. Member 15a attached to weight 15 extends through a slot 16 in the base 5 so that the position of the weight is readily adjustable. Weight 15 also has a projecting stop 15b which moves in a slot 18 carried from the lower portion 3a to limit the travel of the weight. Specification 743,183 is referred to.
