Abstract

577,118. Electrically heating liquids. KRIWACZEK, 0., and KAYE, L. Feb. 29, 1944, No. 3714. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] The heating device of a water &c. heater delivering hot or cold liquid is switched on automatically by the flow of liquid through the heater when (a) its discharge is permitted by a control valve and (b) a selector member is set to the "hot" position. In the example, liquid is admitted through adaptor 5 and passes upwards in a helical path defined by the bare resistance winding 17 and the cylindrical walls 15, 16 of porcelain &c. Thence it flows, as indicated by arrows, via valve 11 and out through spout 9, and, in doing so carries with it a disk 18 connected by rod 19 to a hinged arm 23, 29. With selector lever 10 in the " hot " position and valve 11 open the arm 29 operates an electrical switch device so that the heating winding can be energized only when liquid is discharging at 9. Cold liquid is obtained by moving selector lever 10 horizontally so that arm 29 clears the plunger 24 of the switch 25. An alternative connection is provided by replacing adaptor 5 by plug 8, the liquid entering vertically instead of hor.zontally. Hence the heater may replace any type of existing tap.
