Abstract
681,356. Electric liquid heaters. JEFFERIES, F. G. March 23, 1950 [March 23. 1949], No. 7846/49. Class 39(iii) [Also in Group XXXV] An electric liquid, e.g. water, heater comprises a vessel 10 containing one or more electric heating elements 15 and a thermostat 26 operatively connected with the elements 15 and with a valve 23 controlling the water supply to the vessel 10, whereby the immersion or exposure of the elements 15 acts through the thermostat 26 to control both the valve 23 and the means controlling the elements 15. In operation, the heating circuit is switched on by the manual switch 25 with the valve 28 closed, the elements 15 rapidly heating up. At a predetermined high temperature the thermostat 26 acts to de-energize the coil of a main contractor 21 controlling the current supply to the elements 15, which are hence de-energized, and to close an auxiliary contactor 22 controlling the valve 23 which is then opened, the contractors 21 and 22 being interlocked so that when one is open the other is closed, and vice versa. Water is therefore admitted to the vessel 10 and the temperature drops,. the heating circuit being automatically reclosed and the valve 23 shut. The cycle of operations will be repeated should the water level fall. The thermostat 26 is preferably placed immediately above the elements 15, and the vessel 10 is arranged in a casing and above a transformer 11. Steam is led off by a pipe 16 from the vessel 10. Pilot lamps may be provided.
