804,531. Linear dimension gauges. ALL PRECISION ENGINEERING, Ltd. Dec. 19, 1956 [March 21, 1956], No. 8874/56. Class 106 (2). A gauge comprises a stem 11, a carrier 20 slidable along the stem 11, an index member 42 for effecting measuring, and locating means 28 for clamping the carrier to the stem at any one of a succession of positions therealong, the locating means comprising a row of blocks 18 of circular section and of prescribed diameter which fit snugly within the bore 14 of the stem 11 and are disposed with their diameters end to end along the stem 11, end abutment means 15, 16 pressing against the end blocks to maintain the row in firm axial compression, a straight slot 17 extending continuously along substantially the whole length of the row of blocks 18, a plunger 24, on the carrier 20, having a nose portion formed with a V-notch 28 and slidable along the slot 17 in the stem 11. The fingers of the notch 28 are arranged to span and engage any one of the blocks 18, thereby centralizing the carrier 20 with respect to that block. The carrier 20 also carries a micrometer 50 to give fine adjustment to the index member 42, and the stem 11 has markings 53 read through an opening 54 in the carrier to indicate which one of the blocks 18 is engaged. Fig. 4 shows diagrammatically how the device may be used as a caliper gauge. A spring or spring washer (not shown) may be interposed between the blocks 18 and their clamping means 15 to keep the row tight.
