Abstract

804,262. Moulding reinforced piston packings &c. NORMALAIR Ltd. Aug. 31, 1956 [Sept. 1, 1955], No. 25159/55. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups VIII and XXVI] A flexible diaphragm for connection between two relatively movable elements, e.g. a piston working within a cylinder, is made of silicone rubber or other rubber-like materials integrated with a textile or metal material formed with interlacing loops and capable of stretch in all directions. The material may be a knitted or stockinette fabric having non-run or non- laddering characteristics or one capable of stretch less in the longitudinal direction than in the lateral ; the material may also have longitudinal reinforcing strands. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a length 1 of material with its margins 4, 5 turned inwards and outwards respectively, is arranged over a frusto-conical inner mould ; discs 7, 8 are secured to the two margins, and previouslyapplied rubber paste on the material is then compressed on to the material by the application of an outer mould member. The rubber is then pre-cured at 130‹C. for 2-5 minutes in the mould and for 2 hours at 150‹C. after removal. Longitudinal reinforcing threads or strands of nylon, glass, or other fibres, may be stretched over the conical portion of the diaphragm; these threads may be crimped. Metal reinforcing rings, may be secured over the margins 4 and 5 the disc 7 being omitted. In a further alternative form, a seamless tube of stockinette is positioned around a male mould and longitudinal tension applied during moulding. A still further form consists of a tube of stockinette which is rolled back at one or both ends, if desired over a ring made of yarn, to form beads. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5 a stockinette tube 12 is pulled over an expandable tube 13 and inserted in a tubular mould 14 into which the rubber like compound is introduced through a duct 18. End members 15 are applied to close the tube and steam or air under pressure is admitted through a duct 17 to expand the tube diametrically and superheated steam is then admitted to pre-cure the rubber. After removal from the mould the temperature is raised to 150‹C. for 2 hours. A diaphragm formed with a U-bend 10, Fig. 3, may also be formed between two mould members 2 and 9.
