Abstract

804,885. Pneumatic tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Jan. 24, 1956 [Feb. 15, 1955], No. 4398/55. Class 144 (2). To reduce the wicking of pressure air transversely around the tyre beads along the threads of the chafer strip, the chafer strips 1 are formed of a knitted or laced fabric wherein the threads are mutually interlocked side by side and extend in courses generally parallel with the bead core 2 in the circumferential direction 3 of the tyre. The fabric may be knitted, Fig. 2, in warp or weft, plain or circular, knit, or laced as in Fig. 3. Rubberizing of the fabric by spreading and topping, frictioning or dipping may be effected to fill the spaces, such as 5, Fig. 2, between the threads, or alternatively the threads of the fabric may be initially resin or rubber coated. Cotton, rayon, nylon or polyester threads in the form of fibre or multifilament yarns, or monofilaments, may be used in the fabric.
