Abstract
Fluorosilanes of the general formula RaSi ClbF(4-a-b), where R is an alkyl or aryl radical, a is 1 to 3, b is 0 to 2 and a + b is 1 to 3, are prepared by contacting a finely divided silicon metal-containing mass with silicon tetrafluoride and an alkyl or aryl chloride vapour at about 250-500 DEG C., condensing the reaction products and separating the fluorosilanes. The mol. ratio of chloride to SiF4 is preferably about 0.5 : 1 to 3 : 1. The silicon mass may be ferrosilicon, an alloy with copper, or silicon promoted with metals such as nickel, cobalt, antimony or phosphorus. In the example, a mixture of powdered silicon and cuprous chloride supported on glass wool is heated at 400 DEG C. in a current of nitrogen, the cuprous chloride being reduced to copper. The bed is allowed to cool to 300 DEG C. and a mixture of methyl chloride and SiF4 is introduced, the temperature being raised to 327 DEG C. in 12 hours. The product is collected in dry ice-acetone traps and is fractionated. Methyltrifluorosilane is obtained together with chlorofluoromethylsilanes.
