Abstract
Monoalkyldihalogensilanes are prepared by heating together silicon and a gaseous mixture of hydrogen and an alkyl chloride or bromide. The silicon may be used as such or in the form of alloys or mixtures with copper or other metallic catalysts. The preferred method is to use the silicon in the form of a solid porous mixture of silicon and copper such as is prepared by the process of Specification 575,669, [Group III], and to pass the gaseous mixture of substantially equimolecular amounts of the alkyl halide and hydrogen over this mass at about 390 DEG C. In examples: (1) a mixture of dry hydrogen and methyl chloride is passed over a silicon-copper contact mass comprised of 80 per cent Si, and 20 per cent Cu at 390 DEG C. at the rate of 40 ccs. hydrogen and 30 ccs. methyl chloride per minute. The products were condensed in a mixture of dry ice and acetone and redistilled; (2) as in example (1) except that the gases were passed at the rate of 60 ccs. of methyl chloride and 50 ccs. of hydrogen per minute.
