Abstract
Silanes of the formula (RO)3SiH and (RO)2Si H2, where R is C1- 4 alkyl or phenyl, are prepared by the reaction of gaseous ROH with finely divided silicon in a fluidised state and containing a metal catalyst at a temperature of 100 DEG to 450 DEG C. characterised by (1) performing the reaction below 350 DEG C., (2) using a velocity of fluidising gas greater than 3 times the minimum velocity required for fluidisation, or (3) adding hydrogen and/or nitrogen to the reactants; the formation of undesirable (RO)4Si and SiO2 being thereby suppressed. Preferred temperatures are 250 DEG to 350 DEG C. and the fluidising gas velocity is preferably 10 times the minimum. The silicon mass preferably contains copper as the catalyst with zinc as promoter, and may be prepared by heating powdered cuprous chloride, zinc and silicon in a stream of nitrogen.
