Abstract

In a process for making trichlorosilane, powdered silicon is continuously fed into a reactor, a flow of gaseous HCl is continuously maintained in a fluidized bed of finely divided silicon together with a copper catalyst, and silicon (unalloyed with copper) is continuously fed to the bed at the same rate at which the silicon present is converted to trichlorosilane. The catalyst preferably forms 3-6% of the silicon charge and may consist of metallic copper, a copper-silicon alloy or CuCl2. Any silicon or copper derivatives carried out with gases leaving the reactor may be trapped and returned. Trichlorosilane is isolated by cooling the escape gases to - 40 DEG C. Examples are given.ALSO:A Si/Cu alloy containing 3-6% Cu is treated with gaseous HCl in the manufacture of Cl3SiH.
