Abstract

In a process for the production of uniformly-coloured and corrosion-resistant coatings on a succession of aluminium or aluminium-alloy articles by treatment with an acidic solution containing fluoride and hexavalent chromium, preferably together with phosphate and/or arsenates, the "active fluoride" present in the solution is measured and maintained constant. The "active fluoride" content may be determined by measuring the weight-loss suffered by a piece of glass on immersion in the solution for a given time at a definite temperature, or by any other commensurate means, e.g. by measuring the amount of powdered silica dissolved by the solution under chosen conditions of time and temperature. The example discloses the replenishment with sodium bifluoride of an aqueous solution containing sodium bifluoride, chromic acid and phosphoric acid. The concentrations of hexavalent chromium and of phosphate and/or arsenate are maintained by conventional means. Specifications 632,090, 632,097 and 708,937 are referred to.
