Class 97(1) An objective having a back focal length greater than 80 per cent of its focal length f contains at least one meniscus dispersive component distant between 0.5 f and 10 f in front of the diaphragm and concave thereto and contains between this component and the diaphragm at least one air space with boundary surfaces convex to the diaphragm, the radius of each surface lying between -2.5 f and -0.25 f and the quotient of the radii lying between 0.5 and 2.0 and the length of the air space lying between 0.5 and 10 per cent of the sum of the radii of the said boundary surfaces, the objective having, between the said air space and the dispersive meniscus component, at least two collective components, the sum of whose axial thicknesses is between 0.07 L and 0.60 L where L is the overall length of the objective. Numerical data are given for one example of the objective shown.
