Abstract

803,212. Contacting liquids with vapours. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 31, 1956 [Sept. 14, 1955; Sept. 21, 1955], Nos. 26302/55 and 26962/55. Class 55 (2). A tray for a liquid-vapour contact column comprises a number of sections such as 7, 8 and 9 with perforated portions 7e, 8e and 9e of dished shape and dependent flanges 7a, 7b, 8a, 8b, 8c, 9a, 9b and 9c which dip into and form a seal in an annular trough 4 and troughs 5 and 6 which extend across the column and into the trough 4. The dished portions of the sections are provided with shroud plates such as 8d and 9d (Fig. 3) and the walls at the end of the sections are lower than the side walls so that liquid flows over the end portions of the sections into the annular trough 4 and thence by downcomers 11 (Fig. 1) on to the tray below. Cooling tubes 13 may also be provided in each section and the cross-troughs may be eliminated by joining, e.g. by welding, portions of adjacent sections as shown in Fig. 4.
