Class 55 (2) In a distillation column having superposed, perforated bubbling plates, each plate has a seal trough into which the downcomer from the plate above dips and is thereby sealed, the liquid supplied from the downcomer overflowing from the seal trough into a number of outwardly extend; ing, open transfer troughs which carry it to an outer distribution trough whence it is directed inwardly over the perforated plate area to the downcomer duct leading to the plate below. The Figure shows two sectional elevations taken at right angles to each other of a cylindrical distillation column 1 having inlets 28 and an outlet 29 for vapour and inlets 26 and an outlet 27 for liquid and containing six bubbling plates, each comprising a diametrically positioned seal trough 2 which receives liquid from an elongated downcomer duct 3. The liquid collects in trough 2 and seals the downcomer and then overflows'into two sets of open-topped transfer troughs 4 which carry it to a peripheral distribution trough 5 whence it overflows on to perforated plates 8. It then flows inwardly over these plates and is subjected to the bubbling action of the vapour and passes into the next 'downcomer duct 3. The vapour rises from the space below the plate through gaps left between channel section floor plates 9 and is deflected by hoods 11 to the underside of the plates 8 whence it bubbles up through the liquid flowing across the plates.
